The Jean Harris Trial

In 1980, Dr. , the founder of the Scarsdale Diet, made the fatal mistake of dumping his long-term lover, Jean Harris, for a younger mistress. Ms. Harris was overwhelmed by jealousy and the pain of rejection and she drove to Tarnower's home with a loaded gun. They argued and Harris ended up pumping five bullets into Tarnower, killing him.

In one of the more unsuccessful defenses in the history of crime, Harris claimed that she had been trying to commit suicide, when Tarnower had struggled with the gun, which resulted in her accidentally discharging the bullets into him. The jury was unconvinced and sentenced her to life imprisonment.

She was released from prison on the grounds of clemency in by New York Governor Cuomo in 1993.

She continues working on behalf of the Children of Bedford Fund, a foundation she started that provides educational opportunities for inmates' children. She also is an ardent supporter of the nation's handful of prison nurseries and believes they benefit both the mother and the child.

A 1945 magna cum laude graduate of Smith College, Harris had several teaching jobs and was the headmistress of the Madeira School in Virginia at the time of her arrest for murder. She is the author of five books including They Always Call Us Ladies and Marking Time, both published by Macmillan, and keeps a busy national lecture schedule, speaking on justice and female inmates."
