Hackers are blackmailing the Internet bookmaker expekt.com by overloading
their servers. The website has now been down for three days.
The hackers stated that they are going to ensure that the website remains down
if the website does not pay up.
The well-know expekt.com has been down the entire week after a so-called DDOS
attack. It is not an unfamiliar attack in the Internet world as several other
bookmakers have been exposed to this earlier. Hackers send enormous amounts of
information to the bookmaker’s servers until the amount of information just
becomes too much and the server collapses.
Many thousands Norwegians gamble online with expekt.com.
Some point their finger at the Russian organized crime and claim the Russian
mafia is behind these attacks.
«I don’t know,» said Per-Ivan Selinder, CEO in expekt.com. «As far as we know,
it may just as well be people in the US who are behind this. But regardless, we
are not paying their demand.»
Selinder did not wish to comment on how much the blackmailers wanted, but
«ordinary» demands have formerly been between USD 10-20,000.
In order to get the website up and running again, Expekt has been working with
alternative solutions all week. Expekt is working with the police in both
England and Malta in order to get to the bottom of this.
«Scotland Yard has something called high tech crime unit,» Selinder explained.
«They have been working with this for a long time, and we have contacted them.»
Expekt will be up and running soon, but it was still difficult to get into the
pages Thursday afternoon.
