A Riverview, Florida woman was being held Friday without bond on charges of
plotting to kill her former boyfriend -- a conspiracy allegedly heard on a voice
mail tape and repeatedly played on a Florida radio station.
Elizabeth Jewell Williams, 38, was charged Thursday with conspiring to kill
Charles "Chuck" Rock. Hillsborough County sheriff's investigators say the pair
had had a stormy relationship since 2000.
Rock was doused with gasoline and set on fire Aug. 10 in a park east of Tampa.
He died six days later. Authorities charged Joshua Singletary, 25, with the
slaying.
As the investigation continued, a taped conversation supposedly between Williams
and Singletary hours before Rock's death was played repeatedly on Bubba the Love
Sponge Clem's morning radio show.
In the exchange, two people are heard talking about "Chuck" and "killing
somebody." Clem vowed to keep playing the tape until authorities arrested
Williams. Investigators said they were aware of the tape.
"Law enforcement was in the middle of working on it when he aired it," said Pam
Bondi, spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office. She said the airing hampered
the investigation, particularly because Williams then knew she was a suspect.
Clem has since been fired by Clear Channel Communications Inc., the radio
station's parent company, for airing obscene material unrelated to slaying case.
Williams was jailed without bond Friday. No information on an attorney for
Williams was available.
