Man facing charges in alleged assault on radio
personality
06/05/2004
A senior at Southern Oregon University is facing charges of assaulting
and harassing a local radio host.
Twenty-two-year-old Colman Nelson could be facing up to five years and
10 months in prison.
His alleged victim, Joanie McGowan, told police that Nelson came up
behind her early Friday night, started a brief conversation, and then,
when she turned to leave, punched her in her right eye, breaking her eye
socket.
She said she called police, who arrested Nelson within minutes,
according to Ashland police Sgt. Jim Alderman.
Nelson was visibly drunk, Alderman said.
In court Friday, Nelson cried as the charges against him were read,
telling his court-appointed defense attorney he doesn't remember what
happened. He remained in the Jackson County Jail late Friday.
McGowan said she likely will undergo surgery to repair the fractures to
her face. McGowan was a founding member in 1999 of the improv comedy
troupe, The Hamazons, and is known in Southern Oregon and Northern
California as a Jefferson Public Radio personality.
